3.3 new typology of cohabitation

The project start with the question: is there a possible way of cross-species cohabitation? Is swift hotel the new typology of cohabitation? does coexistence equals cohabitation? The answer is no. The Manifest summerize the stand of cohabitation. cohabitation is not about provide a habitat, but give the right back to nature and identity them in human society.

COMPARISON

Concering the facade research, facade provide comparable living enviroment like cliff biotop. Instead of provid swift breeding nest on a new building, this Project aims to simulate the cliff ecosystem and creat a biotop within the human typology.

facades are habitats for fungi, algae and lichen

Algae is a natural organism that grows on more or less all external surfaces. Over recent years, it’s become more common to see algae growth on domestic and commercial premises.
The first stage of algae growth is colonisation. The wind spreads algae spores. In moist, humid conditions, these spores will begin to grow as soon as they land on a suitable surface.
properties that have poor drainage or ongoing leaks can experience high algae growth levels in other areas. Once algae take hold, it can quickly spread over the external surface.
Algae and fungi prefer the following conditions: humid climate and organic material as nutrition for their own growth.
In the cold months, The warm outflowing air condenses on the cold lintel areas and result in discoloration by algae and black mold on the facade.

RENOVATION STRATEGY

The new renotation strategy is to reuse the existing prefabricated concret slab, which are already occupied by algae and lichens, seeing the “damaged facade” as a living stone.
Outer facade slab will be removed, chiseled on the surface to roughen it up and hanging back to the structural facade layer with 20 centimeters distance. Rough surfaces encourage the growth of algae and lichen. The 20 cm space is the new order of cohabitation. This process turns the concret to a living stone, provide fundamental living condition for cliff flora and fauna.

CLIFF CLIMATE SIMULATION

“Because lichens do not have a waxy cuticle like plants, they cannot conserve water during drought periods. On the other hand, lichens can absorb everything through their cortex, including water and water vapor. Many lichens are found in foggy areas like the coast, but not farther inland simply because there is not enough water in the air to support them.”
by adding a new lift core, which connect every floor directly, the existing lift core transform to a rain water storage, the vertical irrigation system produce water vapor to help the lichens to survive from the urban heat.
