		<description>Preface

Cohabitation
is not only about providing spaces, but also adressing the social and political awareness to adapt to a new order. This consciousness embodies the political entity, appears in social activities, involving in the decision making process and empowering the nonhuman.

Cohabitation

redefines the intersection between nature and culture as a permeable perimeter, that has the ability to accommodate unexpected existence.

Cohabitation

 repeats denials of human center perspective,&#38;nbsp;makes anthropogenic constructions no longer deal with comfort, safety, beauty and property, but tolerance, communication and compromise.

Typology changeIs the statue of paradigm change, how can we imagine the typology of cross-species cohabitation?Creat a bioton in a biotop,the outside is not outside anymore, when the inside is not only inside.
I’m inside, the bird is outside,

but when the bird is inside, I’m outside.

we reflect ourself in each other’s profil.
When the boundary couldn’t make human and nature apart,

the intersection is the new order.

In the new order

human and nonhuman are the agency of each other.
Technology changes our life, as well as the swifts do.
As a human being in a living organism,

I’d rather love my equals.

	&#38;nbsp;1.1 Synanthrope

	NOVEL CONDITION OF COHABITATION

City are refuge for rare species, so much so that they may be able to preserve at least some of the biodiversity that is disappearing ever more rapidly elsewhere. Modern agriculture is highly intensive in its use of land, creating monoculture and adding herbicides and pesticides, which destroys the soil and as a consequence less species could survive.

Synanthrope species, which have an indirect relationship with human resident of cities, occupying the boundary between domestic and wild, establishing novel conditions of coexistence.

	Synanthrope species are ecologically associated with and even evolve to become entirely dependent on humans.
Other species simply tolerate cohabiting around humans and using the remaining urban free space and urban structure as habitat, in some cases gradually becoming sufficiently accustomed around humans to also become synanthropic over time. These species represent a minority of the creatures that would normally inhabit an area. 8% of native bird and 25% of native plant species were present in urban areas compared with estimates of non-urban density of species.

“the biodiversity of a facade is much higher then a monoculture field.”&#38;nbsp;Any vulnerabilities in the building enclosure, such as vents and chimney openings, provides these species with entrance into heated attic spaces and wall cavities beyond. These conditions unintentionally invite species to cohabitate in unwanted and sometimes dangerous ways.

City Zurich contains approximately half the wild plants mammals birds and battles,&#38;nbsp;lacertilian found in Switzerland. But we should not harbor illusions. In a city, many species fight hard to survive and to settle.
In the past, many swiftcolonies were mainly high cliffs, but today they breed almost only on anthropogenic structure. Many swiftcolonies, which had found shelter in apartment buildings from the 1930s - 1950s, have become homeless because the buildings were replaced by “Ersatzneubau”.
The constant decrease in breeding sites inevitably leads to a population decline of swifts

	NON-HUMAN AGENCY

In switzerland, regulation of biotop compensation involved within the decision taking process of construction of a new projects are decided by the non human agency.Biotops encouraging growth of rare ecosystem are mostly protected.

	Art. 18b581
1&#38;nbsp;The cantons must ensure that biotopes of regional and local importance are protected and maintained.
2 In intensively used areas inside and outside settlements, the cantons shall ensure ecological compensation with copses, hedges, riparian plantations or other near-natural and site-appropriate vegetation. The interests of agricultural use shall be taken into account. (...)

	The goal of ecosystem compensation is to promote native biodiversity. The following measures are suitable for this purpose:
︎&#38;nbsp;Strengthening and new creation of near-natural areas.
︎&#38;nbsp;Biodiversity promotion areas (BFF, former ecological compensation areas)
︎&#38;nbsp;Ecological enhancement in settlement areas

Organigramm: interst and conflict

Organigramm summarizes the current conflict and the interest of Zurich city development. Triemlifussweg is originally planed as an express street connecting the highway A1 and A3 in 1950,Residential buildings built in 1960s along fussweg orient to the express street. Due to the high cost of construction Hardplatz, the express street project was rejected, after the housing project completed. The recession in 1973 redefined the real estate market, instead of being ownership apartment, the buildings become rented objects owned by banks and the city Zurich. In 2009, the city decided to demolish the post-war residential buildings and densify the urban fringe with “Ersatzneubau”, with Triemlifussweg included.

subplan of downdrafts system

The Zurich inner city is supplied with cold air primarily by valley downdrafts and slope winds. In particular, the core areas of the city rely on the inflow of cooler air from the slope areas of the surrounding hills.

Wind systems should remain largely unaffected so that they can continue to function and provide nighttime cooling. The inflow of cooler air into the settlement should not be interrupted. Air exchange processes are critical to reducing heat stress.

The facade structures are comparable to cliff and offer suitable living conditions for species that originally occur in rocky areas, thanks to substrate, crevices, holes, food supply and microclimate. Another thing is the temperature which can really high be on outer walls because of the exposure under sunlight. The temperature ist able to last for long time, which allows some thermophilic species to exist. e.g. other licenses exist when the building is overgrown on the outside.

Common swift is one of the most common synanthrope species who lives in the anthropogenic space. They originally belongs to the cliff inhabitants, since the increased castle construction in middle age, they envolved to synanthrope species.
The swift hotel is an replacement of the old nest, which are destroyed during the renovation or demolishment.
Common swift only recognizes the same breeding site, and even won’t forget their nest during the migration to Afrika. Once they lost the breeding site because of a renovation or demolishment, it tooks long until they will find a new one and won’t return the old place again.
The constant decrease in breeding sites ineviably leads to a population decline of common swift.

Species protection is not only about providing spaces, but also a social political awareness to be adapted to a new order.
This consciousness embodies as a political entity, appears in social activities, involving in the decision-making process and empowers the nonhuman.

The place to identify the nonhuman actors is an engagement with the detail of the world and a start of an interdisciplinary collaboration.
the swift aspect should become to an social aspect which keeps questioning the intension of every conventional human-centered design.

	The project start with the question: is there a possible way of cross-species cohabitation? Is swift hotel the new typology of cohabitation? does coexistence equals cohabitation? The answer is no. The Manifest summerize the stand of cohabitation. cohabitation is not about provide a habitat, but give the right back to nature and identity them in human society.

Concering the facade research, facade provide comparable living enviroment like cliff biotop. Instead of provid swift breeding nest on a new building, this Project aims to simulate the cliff ecosystem and creat a biotop within the human typology.&#38;nbsp;

facades are habitats for fungi, algae and lichen

Algae is a natural organism that grows on more or less all external surfaces. Over recent years, it’s become more common to see algae growth on domestic and commercial premises.
The first stage of algae growth is colonisation. The wind spreads algae spores. In moist, humid conditions, these spores will begin to grow as soon as they land on a suitable surface.
properties that have poor drainage or ongoing leaks can experience high algae growth levels in other areas. Once algae take hold, it can quickly spread over the external surface.
Algae and fungi prefer the following conditions: humid climate and organic material as nutrition for their own growth.
In the cold months, The warm outflowing air condenses on the cold lintel areas and result in discoloration by algae and black mold on the facade.

The new renotation strategy is to reuse the existing prefabricated&#38;nbsp;concret slab, which are already occupied by algae and lichens, seeing the “damaged facade” as a living stone.&#38;nbsp;
Outer facade slab will be removed, chiseled on the surface&#38;nbsp;to roughen it up and hanging back to the structural facade layer with 20 centimeters distance. Rough surfaces encourage the growth of algae and lichen. The 20 cm space is the new order of cohabitation. This process turns the concret to a living stone, provide fundamental living condition for cliff flora and fauna.&#38;nbsp;

CLIFF CLIMATE SIMULATION

“Because lichens do not have a waxy cuticle like plants, they cannot conserve water during drought periods. On the other hand, lichens can absorb everything through their cortex, including water and water vapor. Many lichens are found in foggy areas like the coast, but not farther inland simply because there is not enough water in the air to support them.”
by adding a new lift core, which connect every floor directly, the existing lift core transform to a rain water storage, the vertical irrigation system produce water vapor to help the lichens to survive from the urban heat.&#38;nbsp;
